If you look at many of the protocols out there, it’s not unrealistic to try walking at week 6 or 7. And once you plant that seed in your head, and if you’re feeling adventurous, do you really have to wait until that doctor’s appointment a few days later?
Right after I hit the week 7 mark a few days ago, I had to give it a shot. Initially all I could do was one step onto my “bad” leg, full weight. That was a good start. A few hours later, I tried a few steps and was done. At that pace, I wasn’t going to thrive as a zombie, but it was enough. My approach, for now, is to test myself, but never to overdo. Steady, progressive improvement should be the focus.
The next day and the following, I worked myself up to 30 seconds of walking, using a crutch as assistance, when needed. I did this a few times a day. I think I’m progressing well – there’s no pain during or the next day – so I feel confident I’ll be in good shape for my doctor’s appointment.
